A ribawi item is a type of good — most importantly gold, silver, and currency — that Islam subjects to strict exchange rules to prevent riba.
When you trade ribawi items, any delay in payment or delivery, or an unequal exchange of the same type, creates riba. This is exactly why buying gold the halal way requires immediate payment and possession — gold is a ribawi item.
In Pakistan: the rules apply to gold, silver, and rupee/foreign-currency exchanges.
Example: gold traded for gold must be equal in weight and hand-to-hand; gold bought with rupees must be paid for and possessed immediately.
Don't confuse it with: ordinary goods (rice, cloth, a phone), which carry no such exchange rules.
