Who Actually Holds Your Gold, and Your Money? The Custody Chain Explained
The question behind every gold app question: if this company disappeared tomorrow, where would my gold and my money actually be?
The short answer: With physically backed gold through PMEX gold contracts, the gold sits in
PMEX-approved vaults, and custody and money movement sit with PMEX, the exchange, not with the
app you signed up through. Your cash sits in the exchange wallet. Your holdings, in grams and
tola, sit in your account. The app is how you place an order, not where your value is kept.
This is general information, not financial or legal advice. Pebble is pre-launch and will launch only after regulatory approval.
Everyone asks a version of the same question, and almost nobody asks it out loud.
If this company disappeared tomorrow, where would my gold be?
It is the right question. It is also the one most gold content answers badly, because it answers o
Where does the gold actually sit?
In an exchange-approved vault, as physically backed gold through PMEX gold contracts. Not as a number in a company database that someone hopes to honour later, and not as a promise to buy gold once enough customers have paid in.
The distinction is the whole thing. A ledger entry is a claim on a company. Vaulted metal against an exchange contract is a claim on a vault, through an exchange, and the two behave very differently on the day something goes wrong.
Our guide to digital gold in Pakistan covers the metal itself, the 999.0 fineness standard and the bar sizes. What follows here is the part that guide does not go into.
Where does your money sit?
In the PMEX exchange wallet. Not with the platform.
This is the half nobody writes about, and it is the half that matters most in the first five minutes of a relationship, because in those five minutes you have transferred cash and you do not yet have gold.
There is no separate app wallet sitting in the middle holding your balance. Money movement sits with the exchange. When you read a gold platform's material, the specific thing worth looking for is whether the company ever holds your cash itself. If it does, you are trusting the company. If it does not, you are trusting the exchange and its rules, which is a different and much better-supervised thing.
The useful question is not whether a company seems trustworthy. It is whether the company ever touches your gold or your money in the first place.
So what does the platform actually do?
It gives you a way to place an order, see your holdings, and get help. That is a real job and a hard one to do well. It is just not the same job as holding your assets.
Think of it the way you think about a banking app on your phone. The app is not where your money lives. It is a window onto where your money lives. A gold platform built on exchange rails works the same way: the interface is one company's responsibility, the custody is the exchange's.
When those two are separated, the failure of the first does not automatically become a loss of the second. That is the structural reason this arrangement is worth understanding rather than taking on trust.
Who is NCCPL, and does it hold anything?
You may see NCCPL named in the account-opening process. Its role is identity verification and account opening. It does not hold your cash and it does not hold your gold.
Worth stating plainly because unfamiliar acronyms in a signup flow are exactly the kind of thing that makes a cautious person close the tab. Three parties appear, they do different jobs, and only one of them holds anything.
| Who | What they do | Do they hold your gold or cash? |
|---|---|---|
| The platform or app | Order placement, your account view, support | No |
| PMEX, the exchange | Custody, vaulting, money movement, settlement | Yes |
| NCCPL | Identity verification and account opening | No |
What is PMEX, and where does SECP come in?
PMEX is Pakistan's only commodity futures exchange licensed and regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan. An exchange sets the rules that everyone trading on it has to follow, and SECP oversight is what puts an authority behind those rules.
Pebble's own position, stated plainly and separately: Pebble launches only after regulatory approval. We are pre-launch, and we will not describe ourselves in licensing language before that approval exists. If you ever see a gold platform blur those two things together, treat the blur itself as information.
Can you actually take the gold home?
Yes, and this is the test that settles the question. Physical withdrawal is available from 10 tola. Below that threshold you hold the gold in your account rather than in your hand.
Physical settlement completes on T+2, two working days.
Deliverability is the difference between backed and merely promised. A structure where the metal can, in principle, be collected is a structure where the metal has to exist. A platform that can never deliver physical gold at any quantity is one to ask much harder questions of.
What should you check before you trust any gold platform?
Five questions, and they work on any provider, including us:
- Does the company ever hold your cash? If yes, ask where and under whose supervision.
- Where is the gold vaulted, and who approved that vault?
- Can you take physical delivery, and from what quantity?
- What is the platform's own regulatory status, stated in plain words, without borrowing the exchange's status to describe itself?
- Are all costs shown to you before you confirm anything?
A provider that answers all five without hedging is telling you how it is built. One that answers in adjectives is telling you something too.
Frequently asked questions
Where is my digital gold stored in Pakistan?
In a PMEX-approved vault, as physically backed gold through PMEX gold contracts. The platform you signed up through does not hold the metal; custody sits with the exchange.
Who holds the money in a digital gold account?
Cash sits in the PMEX exchange wallet. Money movement sits with the exchange rather than with the platform, so there is no separate app wallet holding your balance.
What happens if the gold platform shuts down?
Because custody and money movement sit with PMEX rather than the platform, the interface and the custody are separate things. Ask any provider to state plainly whether it ever holds your cash or gold itself.
Does NCCPL hold my gold?
No. Its role is identity verification and account opening. It does not hold cash or gold.
Can I take physical delivery of my gold?
Physical withdrawal is available from 10 tola. Physical settlement completes on T+2, two working days.
